At various stages in the history of Cypress, both Atakapan Indian tribes and German immigrants inhabited the area along Cypress Creek. By 1840, Anglo-Americans had established ranches in the area. The original settlers were remembered later when streets and schools were named in their honor. The first one-room school was built in 1884 on the site of today's Cy-Fair High School campus.
The Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District was formed in 1939 when the communities of Cypress and Fairbanks consolidated their educational programs. Serving more than 55,000 students, this large public school district has a reputation for quality. Many of the 34 elementary schools and 12 middle schools have received outstanding performance awards from the Texas Successful Awards System. The six high schools graduate students with test scores and college enrollment ratios that exceed state and national averages. When oil was discovered off the Gulf Coast in 1904, Cypress began to develop rapidly. Rice and dairy farming, which were once economic mainstays, gave way to modern growth of the computer, education, energy and retail industries. Major area employers include Compaq - now HPinvent Computer Corporation, Continental EMSCO Co., Cy-Fair ISD and the Friedkin Co. By 1950, the suburbanization of Cypress had begun. Progress is not all work and no play. The Cy-Fair area provides a well-balanced residential, commercial, and recreational base. Bear Creek Park & Golf World is a 7,600-acre, major multi-use recreational area featuring 45 holes of golf, soccer fields, a wildlife sanctuary, a community center and a rodeo arena. In fact, the Cy-Fair Rodeo is a favorite annual community event established in 1944 by Forrest Arnold. The Sam Houston Race Park is a popular, year-round horse racing complex and other local events such as Rotary Monte Carlo Night, Rotary Shrimp Boil, Copperfield Festival, and A Taste of Texas keeps residents and visitors entertained. Today, the greater Cypress area is a thriving suburb of Houston composed of many comfortable neighborhoods, premier shopping, dining and entertainment. An excellent quality of life, superior education and a broad scope of affordable housing all add to its small-town suburban charm. |
